Most of us were introduced to the wonderful cowardly lion in the classic 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. The lion was played by the actor Bert Lahr who was a popular vaudeville and Broadway star at the time. On her way to the Emerald City, Dorothy meets some amazing characters such as the Scarecrow who only wants a brain and the Tin Man who wants a Heart. She finally meets with the Cowardly Lion who wants courage. In fact, the cowardly lion isn’t cowardly at all and shows a great deal of bravery along the Yellow Brick Road.
The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland in the main role, will always remain a classic and much loved fantasy movie for many people. Not only are there memorable characters but also memorable songs such as “Over the Rainbow”, “Follow The Yellow Brick Road” and “We’re Off to See The Wizard”. In fact, the movie was seen as culturally significant by the United States Library of Congress so much so that it was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry in 1989. In 2007 it was listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register and the scene when the Wicked Witch captures Dorothy and threatens her in the castle was number 86 on Bravo’s 100 scariest movie moments.
The Disney Studios made a sequel to the Wizard of Oz in 1985 called Return to Oz which starred Fairuza Balk as Dorothy. Unfortunately it didn’t fare very well with critics or in the box office. In 1995 Gregory Maguire published a book called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This later was adapted into the highly successful Broadway musical, Wicked. It is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz and describes what happened before Dorothy arrived in Oz and how the Wicked Witch become wicked.
